This was a retrospective analysis of the Neonatal Research Network Database created with a grant from the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare of Japan in 2004. The 82 level III perinatal centers in Japan are registered in the database (listed in the Acknowledgments). Data include infants with birth weight less than 1,500 g. Infants who were born alive but died in the delivery room were also included.
